What is 10G XFP Optical Transceiver?

The 10G XFP optical transceiver is one of the earliest types of optical modules. It is a hot-pluggable, compact, serial-to-serial optical transceiver module that supports SONET OC-192, 10Gbps Ethernet, 10Gbps Fibre Channel, and G709 links, and typically uses an LC connector. The XFP optical transceivers Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) directly adopts the XFI interface specification to define the power interface, fully meeting the limitations of SDH optical transmission networks. Compared to 1×9 optical transceivers and SFP optical transceivers, 10G XFP offers higher transmission rates and capabilities, extending the application range of Ethernet to metropolitan area networks and wide area networks.

The Structure of An 10G XFP Optical Transceiver

The 10G XFP optical transceivers consists of three parts: transmitter, receiver, and memory/diagnostics. The transmitter section includes the TOSA and LD driver circuit, while the receiver section consists of the ROSA and main amplifier. The Flash/EE unit is primarily used to store information such as module type, interface type, transmission characteristics, product model, and manufacturing date. 10G XFP optical transceivers with digital diagnostic monitoring capabilities, in addition to storing the above information, also include a microcontroller and a series of digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion interfaces to monitor five parameters of the optical module in real time: temperature, voltage, laser bias current, output optical power, and input optical power.

The 10G XFP optical transceiver utilizes the GN2010EA main chip, which integrates CDR (Clock Data Recovery), APC (Automatic Power Control), LA (Limiting Amplifier), and a transmit driver. Compared to traditional designs, this not only reduces design costs but also simplifies the design complexity.

Types of 10G XFP Optical Transceivers

Dual Fiber 10G XFP optical transceivers

A Dual Fiber 10G XFP (10 Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable) optical transceiver is a hot-pluggable module that converts electrical signals to optical signals for 10 Gigabit data transmission, using two separate fiber strands (one for transmit, one for receive) for various network applications like 10GbE, SONET/SDH, and Fiber Channel, offering flexibility with different distances (SR, LR, ER, ZR) and interfaces (like LC) for long-haul or data center use.

Features:

  • Dual Fiber: Operates with two fibers, one for sending (Tx) and one for receiving (Rx) light signals, unlike some newer BiDi (Bidirectional)transceiver modulesthat use one fiber.
  • 10G Speed: Supports 10 Gigabit per second data rates.
  • XFPForm Factor: A standardized, hot-swappable module, slightly larger than the newer SFP.
  • Versatile: Used in data centers, carrier networks, and enterprise links for applications like 10 Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and Fibre Channel.
  • Types: Comes in Short Reach (SR, multimode), Long Reach (LR, single-mode), Extended Reach (ER), and Ultra Long Reach (ZR) versions, covering distances from 300m to 80km or more.
  • Interface: Typically features Dual LC connectors.
  • Standards: Compliant withXFPtransceiver modules MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) and IEEE 802.3ae standards.

CWDM 10G XFP Optical Transceivers

CWDM 10G XFP optical transceivers are a low-cost WDM transmission technology designed for metropolitan area network access layers. CWDM 10G XFP optical transceivers utilize CWDM technology, allowing different wavelengths of optical signals to be combined using an external wavelength division multiplexer and transmitted over a single fiber, thus saving fiber resources. Simultaneously, the receiving end requires a demultiplexer to separate the combined optical signals. CWDM 10G XFP optical transceivers are available in 18 wavelength bands, ranging from 1270nm to 1610nm, with a 20nm spacing between each band.

Features:

  • 18 selectable channels from 1270nm to 1610nm wavelength
  • Uncooled MQW DFB LD
  • 10GXFPtransceiver modules package
  • Single +3.3V power supply
  • Operating temperature: 0°C-70°C (commercial grade), -40℃-85℃(industrial grade)
  • Compliant with Telcordia (Bellcore) GR-468-CORE
  • Class 1 product, compliant with IEC60825-1 and IEC 60825-2 requirements
  • RoHS compliant product

DWDM 10G XFP Optical Transceivers

A DWDM 10G XFP optical transceiver is an optical transceiver in the 10G XFP package that utilizes Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Simply put, dense wavelength division multiplexing is a fiber optic data transmission technology that uses the wavelength of lasers to transmit data within an optical fiber, either in parallel bit-by-bit transmission or serial string transmission. DWDM optical transceivers are specifically designed for dense wavelength division multiplexing and offer 44 commonly used channels to choose from.

10G XFP optical transceivers have a wide range of applications, including 10 Gbps SONET/SDH, Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/OC-192, SDH/STM-64HE, and other applications including DWDM links.

Conclusion

10G XFP optical transceivers, with their high data rates, low loss, and interference resistance, have become a core transmission component in data centers and high-speed networks.
